You sell shoes (for now).

Imagine you meet two people: one who doesn’t own any shoes and another with a shiny new pair and a closet full of them. Who do you sell your shoes to?

Thing is, most marketing ‘wisdom’ suggests that you should try to sell shoes to the person who doesn’t have any. After all, they have a clear need and you have a clear solution for them. But that’s not the right move. 

Instead, the person WITH loads of shoes is the better customer. They already know the value of shoes and have a proven history of buying them.

It’s the same with your business. 

People don’t always buy based on need. They buy based on want. And the people who have bought something similar to what you offer are the most likely to buy from you again. 

Why? Because they already understand the value of your product or service.

Focus on People Who Already Buy

So, here’s the big mindset shift: stop chasing people who need what you offer but don’t yet realise it. 

Instead, focus on the people who already buy similar products. If they’ve bought from someone else, they’ll probably buy from you too if you make the right offer. These buyers are out there, spending money on competitors or related services. 

Your job is to find them and present an offer they can’t resist. You might even need to strike up partnerships with your competitors or businesses that offer related products. 

(Side Note: Don’t worry about competition – buyers tend to purchase from multiple providers when they trust the product)

How to Find More Customers Who Just Buy

1) Identify the Proven Buyers:

Look for people who are already spending money on products or services like yours. They’ve already made the decision to buy, so they’re primed to buy again.

2) Partnerships and JVs:

Reach out to businesses that sell complementary products and propose partnerships. Promote their products first to build trust, and they’ll likely return the favour by promoting yours.

3) Targeted Marketing:

Run ads and create content that speaks directly to those who already know and value what you sell. Forget trying to educate people on why they need what you offer. Go straight for the buyers who already want it.

4) Leverage Affiliate Programs:

If you’re hesitant to reach out to competitors, start with affiliates. Find people who serve a similar audience and let them promote your product for a commission.

By focusing on people who have already shown a willingness to buy, you’ll save time and effort trying to convert those who aren’t ready. 

Plus, you’ll close more sales with less resistance!

Subject line of the week

This week’s Subject Line of the Week is: The Secret Parasite in Your Business.

The word “parasite” is incredibly emotive and intriguing, and adding “secret” builds curiosity.

This particular subject line was for an email about how inactive subscribers on your list are hurting your email deliverability. By framing them as a “secret parasite,” it grabs attention and encourages readers to open the email to find out what’s going wrong in their business.
